Can someone tell me why my tractor wont go into gear just after having my clutch reworked.I lined up the splines and the tractor went right together,hooked everything up and it will not go into any of the gears.Thanks in advance again to everyone who takes their time to answer all of our questions. 1964 Jet star 3 propane

Hello DEK
Can you tell me how not unloading the pressure springs effects the tractor not moving when put in gear.I removed the little inspection cover on the side where the TA is located and with the tractor running and in neutral i can see gears moving and when i push in the clutch the gears in the TA stop moving.Maybe its supposed to do this.Thanks for your help and to anyone else who may have a remedy to get my tractor moving.

it sounds likethey for got to unload the pressure springs three cap screws through cover plate to pressure plate

I have tried the ampli-torc in both position and the tractor will not move.Is it possible that i did not line something in the clutch when i put it back together?

Gotta ask, is the Ampli-torque in high? IF it's in low and no good, the same result is what you'll have. The lever for the AT has to be in the forward position to be in high.

Hello TRK -Yes,i replaced the pressure plate.Not shure of everything the clutch co. did,they just said they did a complete cluth job.With the tractor running,i can put the shifter in all the gears but the tractor dont move when i release the cluth. The only adjustment i have done was to give the clutch pedal 1-1/2 inches of free travel before it starts enguaging. If there is another adjustment area i dont know where it is.Thanks again

Sounds like DEK is onto something. Probably the pressure plate. I forgot they had assembly bolt holes in them to compress the springs so they can be assembled. (been 20 years since I took one apart.)

When you put the pressure plate on, did you have to use the bolts to pull it that last 3/8 inch or so up to the flywheel? If it just went up flush, the springs aren't doing their job of pinching the clutch disk to the flywheel.

I cant remember exactly how it bolted up.I plan on splitting the tractor again on Saturday and maybe i will be able to see what the problem is.Maybe you can give me some step by step instructions on what to look for once i have it tore down.

Are you saying that with clutch pedal pushed and engine running the gears won't stop so you can shift it into a gear?

How's your clutch adjustment? Looks like if your linkage was adjusted for a worn clutch it should have no trouble releasing a new one. But you want 2-3" of pedal travel before the release bearing hits the fingers.

Did you replace the pressure plate?


I recollect someone on here had one that was left apart outside for a while and the pto and clutch shafts rusted together.
