Gvi thermostat

Went to change the thermostat in my recently-aquired diesel Gvi today, and there wasn't one in it. The tractor has been running hotter than it should after a hard pull. From what I understand, this would be normal for not having a thermostat. What do you think?

sometimes more flow means hotter operating temps because it doesnot stay in the radiator long enough to cool down I would try putting a thermostat in and if that does not fix the heating problem then might check radiator for blockage

Hey clint
There is more flow with the thermostat in the engine, thats why it keeps the coolant at proper temperature. With out it there is less restriction and slower flow to the radiator, hence hotter engine.

Hey toolz
The thermostat in the engine provides flow that would be reduced if you take it out.Less flow means hotter engine coolant. We use a washer in the place of a thermostat on hot rods with 1/2 in. hole as a starting point, it should be stanless for longer life.

I agree, this is based on my experience with an IH Travelall about 25 years ago. IIRC the Travelall had the IHC 345 V8 engine and I was having problems with it overheating. I had checked everything I could think of and replaced the thermostat a couple of times. I finally ran into an old mechanic at a dealership who told me to check the upper radiator hose to see if it had a restrictor in it. He said they used to put a large flat washer or equivalent in the upper hose to slow down the water. The hoses on this engine were 2.5 to 3" in diameter and without a restriction the water pump would pump water thru the radiator too fast for it to cool off, this was even with a thermostat in place. I got a large washer, that barely fit in the hose, with a center hole a little over an inch in diameter and put it in the hose just above the thermostat neck and it fixed my overheating problem. Without a thermostat you may be having the same problem of pushing water thru the radiator too fast.
