G1050 sputtering

our 1050 diesel is having some problems running at idle. it also is starting to hesitate when accelerating from idle speed. once the rpms get above 900 it evens out and runs perfect. At idle it feels like it is going to die, it sputters and coughs.

If it were a gas tractor I would assume it maybe needed plugs or a carb clean ect... But it's a diesel and I know nothing about diesel motors at all.

Would this be an injector or possibly fuel pump problem? It has a 504 motor. Any guesses on what the damages would be if I were to take it up to the Agco dealer to get into a pump or new injectors? I assume these parts are getting hard to come accross. Thanks in advance.

Im afraid this problem may be more of a repair cost than the tractor is worth.

The local pump shop went thru my injectors and pump which cost about $750. I'm pretty "picky" about clean fuel and apparently the previous owner also was cautious., Consequently the so called "pump head" was in good shape, otherwise it would have cost an additional $750. This place isn't cheap and I expect the prices have gone up 50%, but they do good work. They retipped the injectors and replaced a plastic drive part (wave washer?) in the governor which is prone to failure. Bought a new energy cell which was around $400 from the Agco dealer, so I suspect it would require a King's ransom to get it fixed there. The poor idle sounds like the transfer pump might not be suppling enough fuel to the injection side, or the injection pump plungers are worn enough that it is by-passing/leaking too much fuel at low loads to run properly. Could also be the governor is sticking or worn enough to be unstable at low speeds. However before doing any major surgery, I'd change the fuel filters if not already new, and try it again.

Hey James22

What is an energy cell?

Guido.

Mike, Repairs may not be as bad as you think. I got a G950 this spring and had the injection pump rebuilt for around 400 bucks. It sounds like yours may need some injector work more than anything. Sounds like they are kind of slobbering at first then when RPMs increase they even out. I'd pull them out and have them all checked/rebuilt by a good diesel shop. Agco dealers seem like they dont want much to do with them. If youre around Central Illinois I can pop test them for you. I have a nozzle checker.

It might just need the injectors cleaned. You could try a couple cans of injector cleaner in the diesel

The tractor is located in southwest Tennesee. I had a mechanic come look at it and he is convinced it needs the injectors rebuilt. I did not get a price quote yet, but I don't think it will be too bad. I suppose a T/A or engine O/H would be considerably more expensive to fix. I think it will be worth it to repair, it has a lot of life left in it.

Thanks for all the info fellows, it's been mighty helpful. I found a retired Oliver/MM mechanic who is going to "clean out" the fuel system in my 1050. He is pretty convinced it wont take more then a good cleaning and maybe a rebuild kit for the injectors. Supposedly I wont be going over a 4-500 dollar repair tops.

Im glad it wont be a horrible repair or impossible to get parts for. I really like th tractor, it runs circles around our 4320 Deere. The old girl has 8,600 hours on the meter so I guess she has earned some TLC.
