how hard is it to take the live pto off of a u moline. what will i need to replace it with.

I had one apart also. I want to ad on to older U. So the shaft to the bull will have to be changed. What is the difference in length between the shafts? I bought a lpto assembly but am short a shaft.

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the spacers in the clutch pack and maybe put in shorter bolts to clamp it solid?

Not really once the brake is out the rest is easy to change to the solid shaft. Did one about two months ago took about two hours.

You dont even have to take off the transmission top. Everything can be changed from the outside. You can use the bull pinion gear from a UB G or Late U with disc brakes. If you get one from a G make sure it has the right number of teeth there are two differnt ones. Most people just put the solid shaft in then cut the excess housing off and make an aluminum cover to enclose the brake assembly if you dont have all the left side housings.

Unless you are wanting to change to a drum brake on the left then you would have to disassemble the rearend to change the bull pinion brg housing.

JD, there are easier jobs. You'll need to remove all the stuff fromt he left side brake and pinion clutch, etc., as if you were going to do a brake job. Then, in addition, the transmission top cover has to come off; remove the retainer nut from the inside of the left axle and slide the bull gear off the axle so you can remove the bull pinion. Then, get a different bull pinion from another tractor without LPTO and put her back together. The good news - on a non LPTO tractor, the left and right bull pinions are the same. The left and right side brake backing plate are not though so if you don't have a donor tractor without LPTO on the left side but do have a non LPTO bull pinion, you'll have to re-use all of the housings and you'll still have the LPTO cover, etc, there just won't be anything in there except the brake when you're done.
