Is there a simple way to add power steering to a UB? Seems to be plenty of room to add an automotive style setup. Anyone ever done this or have any thoughts on it?

I have a Char Lynn unit on my Brown Jet, it mounts in the shaft, just cut out the correct amount of shaft, uses the hydraulic pressure hose from the pump for power, returns to where the pressure hose used to connect, pretty easy and compact to install. Works great, no extra pump, belt, etc.

My UBD has a Behlen unit on it. It runs off the hydraulic system. No need for an extra pump/belt. Mounts on the side of the tractor hooked directly to the steering shaft. It works very good.

I once installed a chevy power steering pump and gearbox on a wide front UT.Quite different steering on UB.Moved steering shaft to right side and built special brackets.Really a lot of work.

You can put in a char-lynn steering unit. I have one on my WD45 and it works great. Mine is a model S102E and they install by cutting out about a 6" section of your steering shaft and installing with couplings. The more difficult part will be getting a power steering pump mounted on your tractor somewhere. I think about any steering pump will work, Does anybody else out there know for sure? The steering units are avaliable from THE company out of mt pleasant IA or maybe other sources. Be prepared to spend a couple hundred bucks unless you get lucky and find one. The are 4-500 new just for the steering box no pumps or hoses.

My UB came to me with a Char-Lynn power steering assist unit on it, as mentioned someone cut a section out of the steering shaft. The power steering pump is mounted near/above the distributor. The belt ran off the back flange of the fan drive, not too effeciently with only one side on the pulley. I found a pulley of the approximate size needed and had a machinist cut it down and epoxy it to the back of the fan pulley. I also used a hole punch and cut a hole in the hood to be able to add oil to it easier, new seals did not stop the Char-Lynn from leaking. My spare parts UB has a Behlen Power Steering on it and it is plumbed into the main hydraulic system between the pump and tank/valve assembly. I can get pictures of either if interested. The Char-Lynn is mounted beside the engine while the Behlen is mounted beside the clutch/tranny.
