The rear axle seals on my 1961 Jet leak oil. I have dissassembled the bearing cap and inpected the seal. the seal (MM part # 10A6732) appears to be a double seal. Also the bearing cup is badly pitted on the lower side. Heres my questions.
1--Where do I buy seals at a reasonable price?
2--Is this a standard seal available at bearing houses.?
3--If I replace the roller bearing cup, should I also repace the bearing cone?
4--If I replace the bearings, will this change the shim spacing, There are presently 4 shims.?
5--Or, should I put the whole thing back together and live with the minor oil dripping?
Thanks for your answers.

Hey Mr.Pete

You should take a close look at the gear oil.
I bet you will see silver powder in it. The bearing going bad ruined the seal, I would replace them both and then change the gear oil.

GUIDO.

I replaced the rear axle seals on my 1959 4Star. My parts book says 4Star and Jet Star used same original seal 10A6732

National 417344 or Chicago Rawhide CR28699 were the replacement seals I used. They are a single seal about 3/8" wide They should be available from your local auto parts store

The original oil seal with the lip and the felt ring is no longer available as far as I know. There is a single lip seal that will fit (But the ones I put in my Big MO 400 still ooze oil).

I would worry more about the bearing. Probably the cone is worn too. (The cone turns so it won't have pits like the cup.) If it is like my Big MO 400 (Which is an industrial version of the Jetstar) to change the seal you have to remove the cup, so if you are removing the cup you may as well replace it.

The cone is a shrink-fit on the axle and there is a ring that the seal rides on shrunk on the axle outboard of the cone. I had to destroy the ring and the cone to get them off. I don't know if replacements are available.

And you better have sealer under the ring when you put it back because it can ooze oil through there into the keyway slot too.

These are just some thoughts. ITs your call whether to replace or not.
