Gvi not starting well

I recently bought a Gvi from an unscrupulous dealer who advertised it here. Some of you have had similar dealings with him. (found out too late). It had sat for many years, and I hoped it would run better after a good working. I put in fresh fuel with some injector cleaner, and changed the fuel filters and oil. I can get it started, but have to use ether. I plowed with it this weekend for about 2 hours. Has good power, idles a little rough, and has some blowby out the rear breather. I throttled it down too much before a turn-around and killed it tonight, and it would not restart, even with ether, I think it will start when it cools off. Oil pressure is good. What should I do next? Is it just wore out, or are some rings stuck? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks- Kevin

I HAVE A MASSEY 95 THAT STARTED AS HARD AS YOURS. I FOUND THAT AT CRANKING SPEEDS THE TRANSFER PUMP IN THE INJECTION PUMP WAS NOT PUTTING OUT ENOUGH PRESSURE.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got it started easily tonight with a little ether. Now I've got a water leak high on the center head. I'll pull the hood this weekend, and go over it good, with your suggestions. Thanks again for your help.

If it requies ether to start at higher ambients, that is one good indication it may have broken rings or just wore out. When you get it started, feel the external plugs retaining the energy cells. If one remains cold then that cylinder is miss-firing. Also, loosen one-at-a-time each injection line when the engine is running and notice how this effects the engine. This might allow you to narrow the problem down to a couple or a single cylinder. Although not likely, you might have something as simple as a slight fuel system air leak.

Hey tools

You did not mention the air system, make sure the air filter is not restricting to much air.
If there is a gauge in the duct system look at it and see if it is red. It means that it has at least 25 in.of water column restriction and the air cleaner needs servicing.

You are in the need of a pump rebuild. Right now the metering valve is stuck in closed position, if you take top off of pump and wiggle the little lever that touches the screw that comes out of the pump at an angle you can get it started. This screw is a stop for wide open and you are stuck closed.

I would think more too injectors if you have good power while its running. The poor idle will probly be injectors.Check the compression on each cylinder and check that they are about even. Some blowby is normal.Maybe this will give you a starting point Phil
