When I put my 403 in my UB and the ring gear hits why can't I use my 283 flywheel on the 403 crank? thanks

The 403 ring gear goes right on the UB flywheel no machine work necessary. It will fit on the late U as well. Still have to grind the inside of the housing Just use a 4 inch grinder and have the 403 ring gear in hand for trial fitting before you put it on the UB flywheel. This will get you close you may have to swing the engine in a couple of times to make sure it clears properly. This is not a hard thing to do should take maybe an hour at most.

The flywheel bolts up fine. The problem is the hole for the starter in the crankcase is about 1/2" farther from the crankshaft.

So you either have to use the 403 flywheel with its ring gear, use the 283 flywheel and do some really creative machining to get the 403 ring gear on it so that you can use the starter in the 403 crankcase hole, or just build the 403 up on the 283 crankcase.

My experience is putting a 403-4A power unit engine into a '54 UTS that was a diesel. I did not know about UB flywheels, I only was sure a U 283 flywheel would not work.

The ub gas and the late U gas flywheelthat have the starter like a UB will both take the 403 ring gear. I agree with you that it makes a much nicer set-up to swap the parts into the 283 crankcase but if you had a good runing 403 it would be a shame to tear it down.
