I have been operating my MM 445 for almost 30 years, It still runs great, but my power steering "box" is leaking too much to ignore, with fluid coming out where the steering shaft goes into the power steering unit. The O-ring seal that I can see looks loose, but I suspect that it is not the primary seal. Is this worth dismantling myself, or is that job better left for the experts? Also, is it possible to but a rebuilt unit?

Thanks for any input, it is an awesome tractor and I want to keep it in working condition.

Joe

What is really happening is the piston seals on the ram that turns the wheels are passing fluid. The fluid collects in the steering housing until there is enough to run out around the steering shaft. Its supposed to only be 90wt. gear oil in there.

I've replaced those seals 3 times myself, anyone can do it, but it does take several hours. Your best bet is to get the I&T manual for the 445 and read the procedure. Then you will have some idea if you want to tackle the job yourself.

If you do what it takes to get the oil to stop running out the steering shaft without replacing the seals on the ram, it will probably eventually fill to the point fluid runs out the breather under the radiator.

Thanks!

Just a few hours ago I fired up the tractor, and the Pressure relief under the radiator was gushing fluid, and also spraying out of the steering box. Is it possible I have been using the wrong fluid? I buy the "Universal" hydralic oil at TSC.

For the past couple of years, when I started the tractor it immediately began turning the wheels hard right by itself. I guess this should have been a sign to me that the ram had a problem. I do have the correct manuals that explain the procedure, looks intimidating, but guess I will have to try it.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Joe

Yes it is possible to rebuild them. I just did a M5. I had a machine shop rebuild the housing. They removed part of the "O" ring end and made a new sleeve and inserted it into the housing. They had to do that to get a new area for the "O" ring. I also had a new shaft made. All that was $110. Then in the housing I put in a new activating lever and bushing ( one that runs the valve ). It is not real difficult to rebuild, but is touchy. Mine is a little stiff yet but Im assuming there is not enough "play" yet to allow movement of the valve. It is there some of the time and some not yet but it is getting better. Any small amount of binding wont allow it to move the .040 it needs to work. The "O" ring does hold in the gear oil.
