5 star steering question

I was able to do some searches in this forum and found out some info on working on the PTO.

Besides the problem with the broken PTO coupling, I also have a problem with the steering. It seems to be very stiff now, you have to crank it on turns. The hydraulic system has enough pressure to operate the frontloader OK. So I wouldn't think that low pressure would a problem. What else should I be checking?

The best advice I have is get an IT manual if you don't have one. Then, jack the front of the tractor off the ground and check out the steering to see if it steers freely with or without the engine running, your trouble could be between the steering wheel and the control valve. There are 3 U-joints, an orbit bearing and two brass sleeve bushings between the steering wheel and the control valve. Then there are king pins and tie rods to deal with. Any of these things can cause a big bind. If that's all good, then raise your eyebrow at that control valve. If the problem is there, we all can help you.

I have a M5 that I rebuilt and it still steers hard. I havent had a chance to put a gauge on it to check the pressure yet. I had rebuilt the housing, new shaft, new pin and bushing, new O rings, checked the separator clearance...was just fine assembled as it says. 2 of the universal joints have been replaced so its not there...wondering about the shaft up and down by the pedistal. It seems to be there a little, if you turn the wheel a little faster. Any Ideas?

OK, I did get an IT manual. But I won"t be working on the steering right away - so I will try your suggestion in a week or two.

I pulled the seat and hydraulics tonight to see why the PTO isn"t working. The clutch pack and coupling piece that engages the clutches are completely gone and there is some scoring on the shaft as well. So I will have to call around and see what it cost to get these parts. Ouch.
