Cheap small block plan:

displacement: 280 cubes

bore: 4" (chevy piston CHEAP anywhere)

stroke: 5-9/16" Offset grind 2-1/16 rod journal X 9.5" length Deere H rod. (two in the junker, two to find)

compression: 11:1-12:1 with ported 10A5856 heads (on the shelf)w/ Manly performance Chevy 350 valves (cheap)

RPM: 2040

manifolds: ported U302 LP intake/exhaust with dual outlets (on the shelf)

carb: M670 Marvel-Schebler bolt-on (on the shelf)

cam: Berry -per compression, cubes, and rpm ($162.50)

ignition: MSD programable (examine hi-tech mags?)

QUESTION: CAN A 220 BLOCK GO TO FULL 4" WITHOUT EXTENSIVE WORK? CRANK WELDING TO MAKE 6" COST HOW MUCH MORE THAN OFFSET GRIND? 3.875 X 5.5625 GIVES 262 CUBES. 4 X 6 GIVES 301 CUBES.

The last HD 220 blocks I had wer already at 3.810 bore and wore a good bit past that. It would be close but if they were sonic checked they could possibly go 4.000.

Would it be possible to cheaply sleeve them at 4.00"? That bore size works out to be way more convenient and yield a few more cubes necessary for what I'm doing. May be a little thin otherwise huh?

Those blocks are even weaker then the big stuff. Over boring for a sleeve would further weaken if no other work was done other than putting in a sleeve. The one advantage on these is the deck is getting pulled to the head instead of the block being clamped between a head and crankcase. I haven't done the math on CH but there are other pistons available under 4.00. Like 307 chevy 3.875 std bore oversize .030? SO on so on..... the 307 CH will be .115 more than the 350. I think they are available individually. Also the 2 1/16 rod journal offset ground will hold no problem.
