55' UTS Starter???

My starter recently gernaded on my 1955 UTS. I contacted my uncle, who has many Molines, to ask if he had another for me. He sent a Delco-Remy 1107905 9E3. He had never payed much attention because his all use the same starter (he thinks) It turns out mine is a Delco-Remy 1107977 _ _ 1. I do not know two of the digits because they are scratched off. The cast nose cone on my broken starter is shorter than the 1107905 9E3, and the starting gear is quite a bit different. Just for giggles I checked Napa Auto Parts, and they have an equivilent Wilson starter, but it is $400.00. Can anyone tell me the difference, and why is it seem to be more difficult to find the starter I need? Thanks for the help. Molineone.

As pointed out, there are at least 2 flywheel configurations - but also important is voltage - 1955 should be 12 volt and there were changes in part numbers in 1955 depending on whether you have 283B4 or 283C4. Further diesels had different starters.

Assuming we are talking gas
earliest I show (6v) KEF & 283A4 thru 1950 engine 01905452 used Delco starter 1107905
next change (still 6v) 283A4 thru 1952/53 motor 01925367 used Delco starter 1107977 UB with 283B4 motor 06100001 was 12V with Delco starter 1107605
Beginning in 1955 with UBSpecial with 283C4 motor 09500001 used Delco starter 1107659

I"m not sure what changes went with which starter, but I can confirm 1st 2 are not interchangeable.

Diesels used 1109236

In mid 1952 U starters and flywheels were changed.The second number you listed is the starter with more teeth on the starter drive. I think all the nose cones would be the same. I have a 52 UTE and needed a 7977 starter and I got one off a 53 U.
