can't shift

Hi I have just been working on a 445 that has been sitting for many years. Started and runs good, hyd work, but can't get it in gear. Shift lever moves sidewise but that is all. There is a heavy preformed wire in the shift base that is lose and floating around and somehow I think this should have something to do with the shifting but don't have a clue how it should work. Thanks for your help Roger

Thanks for your help. I took the cover off. The rear end of the top rail in the cover was rusty. Cleaned it up and now it shifts nice. Roger

This reminds me of a funny story. One day my Jet Star simply stopped shifting forward and back. I used it often and it had very little wear. The shift cover was removed. I oiled up the rails which appeared to be moving freely. As soon as I put the cover back on, it would jam again. I could not think of what I had done. Then I remembered I had changed from the suspension seat mounted on the 3-point over to the old-style pan seat that mounted on a bracket to the tranny cover right behind the shifter. The mounting bolts were just a hair too long hanging inside the tranny. After removing the seat and adding 3 washers, it shifted fine. Yeah, I felt dumb.

As for your problem. My M670 did this. It sat for years. I removed the top cover, oiled the dry shift rails, and gently bumped them loose with a brass hammer. Worked like new.

JK2, I have been thru the same, just take the shift tower off and soak the detent balls and get them broke loose and you will be good to go

Roger,
The wire is not connected to anything other than the shift tower. Your problem appears to be that the shaft the shift handle is connected to is not moving back and forth to select the gears as it should. You may have to take the shifter assembly off and free up the shaft in the bore so it slides freely.
