I am looking at a 1945 UTS Serial # 324350S for sale, as a project tractor to bring back to like new condition. I want an MM keeper tractor that I can show and use in antique tractor pulls. I do have experience with Fords, Olivers and Farmalls as restoration. This will be my first MM.

Here is a response from the seller: :This tractor ran when it was parked in it's present location. It has been several years since it has been run and it is not currently known if the engine is free. As far as it being intact, I will send additional photos for you to review. The owner is asking $1000 for this tractor.

What can I expect to find when I see it in person. The tractor is in southern ID. so it gets some snow and cold on it.
Is it likely that the engine will be stuck?
Can water get into the trans, and rearend and crack the case?Does this look like a good project tractor and are parts available

Thanks for any and all help and comments.

I too can't open pictures - but you mention pulling - you may want to consider a later version of the UTS - I'm sure someone else can tell you more, but there were several variations of engine - I think KEC, then KEF, then 283A4, then 283B4, etc. I think the one you are looking at is KEF with 1 piece head. I think the later 283A4 circa 1948(?) was first with split cylinders/heads (2 pairs of cylinders with a separate head for each pair of cylinders). The later engines generally make more power and the split heads give you lots more options in terms of increasing compression ratios and still staying "stock" for pulling.

Yes Ed, the seller did state that the engine had KEF stamped on the data plate. I am new to MM's so the information you gave about the different engines and which ones can be worked over was good information for me

And he is stuck on $1000 for it as he has sweat equity built into it because it was a long term family tractor. Seems too much to me though.

As for the pictures not opening, I dunno, I have to wait a few more seconds but they do finally open for me.

Thanks again,

Hi, I can't open the pictures, but I think the price is a bit high. If you look around long enough you could probably find a UTS that runs for that price or a little more. They are fairly common. If it has sat outside for "several years", uncared for, it could very well be stuck. It would be very easy for the seller to check and see if it turns over by just cranking it by hand. Parts are easy enough to find. The U engine was made for many years and was very reliable. If you have to open up the engine to un-stuck it, plan on buying a gasket set and new rings at the minimum. Valves could be stuck too. The manifold tends to crack on U's. Watch out for rusty rear rims, "fluid used for weight" After sitting out for years the tires are probably rotton, and Electical stuff will probably have to be replaced.
Good luck

The pictures don't open for me either. I will agree with what was said above and mention that water can get in the tranny/rearend around the shifter ball if the rubber cover is missing. You are looking at a good 6000 pounds of tractor min. Rated at 45-50 Hp. HTH Bryce
