Have a Model Z with Serial No. #000605396. What year and Model is this? I thought it was a 1951 ZAU, however, when I looked at the serial no's on this forum I have become a little confused. The Serial Number tag just states Model Z. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

As the last serial# in the 1950 run was 00605435 (which came after yours), your tractor has to be a 1950 model ZAU. The 1951 models started with 00605436.

1950 can be confusing when checking serial #'s. Somewhere they changed from 10 digits to 8. I wonder if it was with ZAU #00604141 as that was where the Flote-Ride seat and 5 3/4" headlights were introduced. (A new look, new numbers?) Also, M-M plates may have all the model letters or only the first, no definite pattern. Anybody else have insight on these issues?

Gary it looks to me like you have a 1950 ZAU according to my book but you have an extra 0 on the front My book shows 00605436 to 00605435 are 1950 models so yours would be one of the last ones.

Clint, take a look at the numbers you posted. You are telling us only 2 ZAU tractors were made that year. By your numbers 0065396 would be a 1949 model, think you may have a typo in your post??

OK, I made an error in my posting, one to many 0's. Corrected Serial number is 00605396. With that said, I still don't know if it is a 1950 or 1951! Another question I have. I understand that the Z is the model, what does the A and the U stand for. I have been told many different things to include row crop tractor, chassis, hand cluch, later style, etc.. Thanks for any help.

ZAU
Z= series of MM model
ZA-Second in the series (ZT was first. I think T stood for tractor. ZB was third, B did not stand for Bus. Ha Ha!)
U="Universal", MM's designation for 2 wheel narrow front axle. A Universal tractor could both plow and cultivate.

Other possible ZA front axles were S-standard tread wide front, E-adjustable tread wide front, N-single wheel front.
