I am thinking about converting the 6/8 volt positive ground setup on this tractor to a 12V alternator with negative ground but I am not sure how to make the starter work. Will the starter turn backward with the switch from postive to negative ground? If so, would it work to switch the starter brush wires?

Does any one have a link that would explain this swap? Thanks for any info.

Who told you it can't be rebuilt? I have had no problems getting the old generators on my MMs fixed by our local starter and alternator repair shop.

And if your tractor was mine, I would have that same shop rebuild the generator with 12v fields and regulator and then I could have an original-looking generator on my restored tractor that would charge a 12v car battery which would give me the best of both worlds.

The generator is possibly the one that came with the tractor. It has been rebrushed and rebuilt several times. The armature(sp?) is bad and it would be too exspensive to replace. It also has a 1/2 wave regulater that always is out of ajustment. Alternator is a huge improvement. This tractor is still used on the farm.

My Dad who operated this tractor since 1948 always cussed it for the poor electrics on it. He said the post WW2 stuff just didn't work like the pre-war stuff.

He was very good with magneto systems. He also could make grain and corn binders tie bundles no matter what. I wish I was older and smarter when he was working on this stuff. He passed away in June of 1999 and his skills are missed.

Connect up a Delco 10SI alternator like THIS:

Third Party Image

Then, use a ballast resistor ahead of your existing coil, or get a "true" 12-Volt coil, such as a NAPA 12SB. Since the system will now be (-) ground, connect the ignition switch to coil (+), coil (-) to distributor.

If you don't want to use the diode, use an "idiot light" with a #194 bulb, or equivalent.

The only starters that I know of that turn backwards when the battery polarity is reversed have permanent magnet fields in them. (First noticed this on lawnmower starters.) The old Delco starters that MM used have field coils and they are immune to this ailment. Probably because both the magnetism in the field and the armature are reversed when the battery polarity is changed.

This information is just what I needed to know.
It is very much appreciated!

The old generator on this tractor can't be rebuilt any more so this will make it reliable.

I plan to drive this old Minnie in a Pioneer's Day Parade in my hometown of Palisade, NE in June 2008.

Thanks Again!
