Early M670 diesel timing question

Im working on an early M670 diesel (non super) for a friend of mine. I am completely rebuilding the engine. I started to assemble it today and have a question about the timing marks on the cam gear. I found the mark fine on the crank gear but according to the tech manual, im supposed to line up the #1 on the cam gear with the mark on the crank gear. When I do that, the lobes for the #1 cylinder are up in the high position, as at the exhaust cycle, starting the the intake cycle. Im confused, this would mean that its on #4 top dead center. Is this due to the drive for the injection pump? My second question is there are two marks on the cam gear, the #1 and on the tooth next to it is #2.

Any help is appreciated.

No, you must turn the engine 1 turn to bring it to #1 before you put on the pump.

Thanks for the info. Do you know why they do this? why didnt the just put #1 tdc marks on the cam? I can see where this has caused confusion in the past.

Thanks again for the help.

Jake

Everything is fine. Make sure when you put the flywheel on when the marks are lined up and its marks line up with timing hole. You should also have marks on crank pulley. MM engines are just built that way, when the marks are lined up you are at #4 tdc or #6 tdc.

When i installed the flywheel, i double checked and the marks for TDC are at 90 degrees from the crank throws that are up, like the tech manual shows. So Moline engines are timed for the rear cylinder being #1 i take it? When the pump is installed and the timing marks on the pump are lined up, its timed to #4?

Thanks for the help.
