UTS, UB Exhaust Manifold Questions

I have a 52 UTS and a 54 UB both with cracked exhaust manifolds. I had heard that 5 Star or M5 manifold was better way to go - more power, less problem with rust out. But I have several questions. There appear to be 2 options a 1 piece and a 2 piece manifold - also they seem to be same for LP or gas. Lastly they have an bracket on right for mounting air cleaner. Which manifold do I want and what do I do about bracket? I also have a Parts tractor - a GB LP - is it practical to try and use that manifold? Thanks in advance.

I have one of these manifolds if you need it. bought it for a tractor and then sold the tractor without putting it on.

do you still have this manifold? I also have a UTS with a cracked manifold. I hear the 2 piece makes more power. which do you have? mine is gas.

You can use either one of these manifolds on your U an UB. How ever a word to the wise go with the one piece manifold. "both intake and exhaust are bolted or cast together. This will help keep the intake from frosting up and causing to to not run correctly. Gas is the best one for your gas U and UB.I am running one on my 50 model uts with out any problems. The air cleaner still mounts to the head bolt by its own bracket and the one cast into the front of the 5- star and m5 is not used at all and will clear the air cleaner you have. Your GB manifold will be hard to get it to seal againest the heads and will not right. Side by side the look the same but there is a difference between U and G manifolds. Hope this sheds some light.

The GB manifold (the manifold with the heat riser valve in it) has larger intake and exhaust ports. It is also designed for a taller engine (403 blocks are about 2" taller than 283 blocks.) so the carburetor mounts lower and a bit farther out from the engine.

I put a 403 engine in a UTS once, I also had to cut one of the loops from the heat riser valve to get the hood to clear it. In my opinion the 5 star manifold is the way to go.

I am thinking you will be able to use the original governor link to the carburetor with the 5 star manifold on a 283 U engine. If the engine tries to run away you will probably need to make a longer link.
