Charlotte:

Those steel wheels & rear fenders look like they came off of a 1935 - 1937 Hart-Parr/Oliver 70 Row Crop. Oliver Called them Tip-toe Sreel wheels. Like was said earlier, I don't believe that steel wheels were available on the R. My 11 year old daughter has a 1951 RTE and I believe we are runing 11.2 x 38's tires on pressed steel rims on the back of it.

Not knowing the real history of your tractor, a possible explanation for it having Oliver steel wheels and fenders would be that at some point when tires were being rationed during WWII, the owner didn't want to wait until he could get enough points to get new tires, so he found these Oliver wheels & fenders some place cheap. They must have bolted up exactly or without too much modification and did the job as long as the tractor was needed on that farm. In those days and up until everything got so computerized that you had to have a degree in electronics to work on them, farmers were a very resourceful bunch of people. They could fix or make almost anything work. Sometines it wasn't always the prettiest, but it always got the job done.

Hope this gives you some ideas!

Its probably the heat. He will like it more when he drives it. Besides, in almost every restoration there is the point where you wonder what you were thinking when you started this. .

The rear wheels should be either 36" or 38". My '48 RTU has 11-38 tires on it. Lots of the earlier ones had 36". The fenders look like Oliver parts and the wheels look like Oliver 'tip toe' wheels too.

My Daddy said his uncles would put the steel wheels on their Olivers when they plowed 'new ground' (Freshly cleared land) to avoid puncturing their rubber tires.

that number is for a clamp on the rear wheel the RTU tractors were not made from the factory with steel wheels any that had steel wheels were adapted in a shop or after market wheels put on it
