If yours has the plug for distributor or air breather you take it out to put it in there. Not all governor shafts are cut with the teeth for a distributor gear so have make sure have that too or change out shaft so you can drive it. Then put a plate over mag hole and put vent there. Dist is modified to fit with correct gear on it then. We converted several for irrigation engines and even modified some Vertex magnetos to fit some too when Bosch was supplying bad mag coils for a while. I have some Vertex to fit them but the gears are worn bad but no more HEI now. We used HEI from 292 Chevy to convert but they are hard to find now too with most being worn out and GM probably quit making them.

I think you only have to cut the shaft and housing of the HEI distributor to the correct length and then install your gear (drill and pin).Mine was already done when I got it,but that is what I was told.
