I'm posting this for my father. He has a 1953 Moline UMIL. It is still in great running condition. We have found that it was built for the Corp of Engineers. We would like to have more information such as which branch and what was it's exact use? We have searched extensivly on the web to no further findings. There has to be someone out there that either used this tractor for the corp or knows what it was used for.....The tractor would never leave his place but we are also curious as to what it's worth might be?

I saw one of these in Ca for sale a while back - asking was $10k restored but painted yellow instead of Olive Drab - guy had photos incl military s/n before restoration. He claimed it was USAF and had been used in Korea pulling B52 bombers on base.

Also claimed it had been sold to DelMonte along with a sister tractor and used in Ag business in central Ca post USAF service.

Really odd creature - if you restore, suggest you keep Olive Drab or whatever is under yellow and try to remove paint gently to recover serial number which would have been stenciled on hood.

Another potential source of info is the Floyd Co Museum in Charles City, Ia (641) 228-1099

You have a great find - hope you can track its history.

Hi Heather, I have one of those. Looks just like yours but mine hase dual rear wheels. I have a set of manuals if you would need part numbers. Does it have a tag on the fender. I was thinking mine said it was for the NAVY.

A total of 357 UMIL's were produced in 1953. It is usually called a UTIL-M which is a U with a shuttle shift and gas foot pedal made for military. Any pictures I have seen they were green army colors. Some had duals. Top speed was 12.5 mph,had a turning radius of 17ft and weighed a hefty 9500 lbs.The books show it used a 340 ci motor not a 283 like a standard U. The one shown in the book by Sayers has US Army stock number 66-T865-20.

ok, called my dad and got some #'s off the tractor. He said on the tag it says UMIL on the right side of the transmission there is the tag with the tractor # on it which is 05700026 On the engine is the serial # which is 05600026 and then there is 340-B on the same tag. hope this helps some on the looking up of the tractor....

Well, we maybe stuck then....what little we had found showed that it is # 27 of 42 produced. other research on this tractor site and the mm's collector club also came up with only 42 produced.

Heather,
You are correct. There were 42 UMIL produced in 1953 only. This is a different tractor than the UTIL-M which was also made in 1953 only. Along wtih the 340B engine, the UMIL has the radiator and front axle from a GTB tractor which makes it look very different from any other U models. The UTIL-M had the standard agricultural front axle, hydraulic brakes and 283 engine. I've seen manuals for this model come up for sale on eBay before but I've never seen the real tractor. Quite a rare piece.

In the MM Registry there is a UMIL listed as sn# 05700022 and belongs to "Art Webb". Can you post a picture to help identify?

Yes it does have PTO...there are two tags on the fender one says how to lift up and tie down...the other is shipping data...on the tag the weight says approx. 6550 I was wrong on the number on the trans instead of 05700026 is is 05700027, so I had it being # 26 made instead of 27 which didn't make any difference unless someone has # 26 out there :<)This tractor is displayed at two shows annually in Missouri. I will try to get over there the next couple of days and take some up close pictures and post them on my dad's site....I'll send a post in when I do. It has the army green underneath the yallow moline color that was painted over it.

It was good to read this poasting lastnight on a Memorial Day. I myself would like to see this tractor close up.

Do you know if the tractor has a 3pt hitch? PTO?

If I could guess...The tractor was used to pull something like cargo plains around the yard. Or maby just cargo. I believe the tractor is too heavy to parachute from an airplain (in the 50's & 60's) to make runways. Again only guessing. I could be wrong.
