UTU STEERING OIL LEAK

Is the lower pedetal bearing suppost to have an oil seal in it,I noticed a puddle of gear oil under the front wheels, but it says in the manual if over filled, it will run out there.I added oil last fall,but I did not see any come out then. could built up grease on lower bearing held excess in till now? It does show an oil retainer in parts book. THANKS JDC

Brian, I checked the oil today, it seems to have enough, I stuck a little tube in there off a wd40 can and stirred it around,and it's real sludged up, never been apart from new, so It was probably stopped up when I added oil, from years of grease on lower bearing, and the thick old oil, and just now broke loose and ran out.

I have the same problem with my '50 UTU that I am now working on. I had the radiator off for something else, so I took the cover off and added oil, a couple days later I had a puddle underneath. I don't have my manual handy, but if it says if it is over filled it will leak out the bottom? I got to thinking, the steering gear is in a "tub" of gear oil, so if that is over filled it will go down the pedistal.The bearings there are greasable. I put oil in the center-so it was suppose to leak out. Some day I'll get my book back.
