jetstar brakes

How big of a job is it to replace brakes on a 1961 jetstar?? I have no brakes on one side. Thanks

Big as in taking a lot of time or Big as in hard to do?

The jetstar brakes are located behind the round cover in front of the axle, just below the footrests. You don't even have to take the wheel off.
It is held on by three 5/8" bolts. The outside disk, the actuator assembly (plates that wedge apart to apply the brakes) and the inner disk. After that will be an inner plate with the shaft seal in it. It is held on by 3 1/2" nuts.

Most likely the brakes will be either greasy because the seal went out, worn out, or springs broken on the actuator, although I have seen water damage (rust) on tractors that sat out a long time.

Two things to be aware of: Do not lubricate the actuator in any way. It tends to stick in the applied postion when you do.

When you replace the inner plate with the seal in it, protect the seal from being cut on the shaft spines.
