I am now the proud owner of a M602 LP tractor in lets call it fair but restorable condition. I have been there when it started, I watched it run, bought it and was to take delivery when the 3 pt actually went up and down. It was in my driveway when I got home from work today and I never got a lesson in starting it. I know the 1st step is charge the battery (I've gotten it to turn over very slowly)but nothing beyond that. Between knobs on the tank, choke, throttle and other knobs and buttons, I am lost. Can someone give me the basic steps? I am ordering the book, but I want to run it up and down the field right now. This is a step up from a Farmall H for me, so I'm very excited.

One thing to help with the shifting is to pull the torque back to low range. If you stop movement with the torque in high range and still in gear it can be difficult to shift. Sometimes it helps to ease it out of gear just before it stops forward movement. These don't have a syncro-mesh transmission in them so that is why they shift hard.

Does that mean it won't go into gear? If so, a short time cure is to shut off the engine, put it into gear, start. IF you put it into the low range position, lever back, it will go into gear easier. Sometimes, the pressure of the tractor setting on an incline will make it hard to put into or shift gears. Another thing you NEED to know is to not use the tractor in LOW range until it's warmed up. Using low range cold can and will damage the clutch discs and driven plates. Good luck with it!! John

It goes into every gear but 1st fairly easily, but I have not spent alot of time with it. I need to get the tank filled before I really try it out.

The 1st thing to do for fuel is turn on the VAPOR valve SLOWLY, if turned on too fast, it'll close a safety within the valve and then you'll have no fuel. 2nd, pull the choke, she should start, don't know about the 602, but on my U the choke will keep it at idle no matter where the throttle is set. Push the choke in and it'll run. Only use the LIQUID valve after the engine is warm enough to vaporize the liquid and close the vapor valve when using liquid. When shutting off, close the liquid valve, open the vapor valve, let her cool down, shut the engine off. Should work for you then.

Thanks for the advice, did what you said, it started right up and ran like a charm. I just have to figure out how to get it into 1st.
