What can you tell me about the MM pumpkin style torque convertor used on 1950 time period self propelled combines??? I have been told thid was from air force surplus aircraft and that it would reverse itself. Any information would be appreciated.

Heres what the original model S MM combine sales literature says.

Powerflow-New-Different-Better-Absolutely Dependable-Proved and Approved

Yes,youre right-even modern automobiles dont offer anything like it-the Thomas Hydraulic Drive provides the MM Self Propelled Harvestor with a wider speed range and smoother control for more complete flexibility in regulating ground speeds.

This drive is operated by hydraulic oil and air pressure built up in the unit and provides different ground speeds from zero to maximum speed in any gear-shift setting.Even while the machine is in motion the ground speed can be changed by regulating with a light touch the control lever mounted on the steering wheel column. No matter what the ground speed may be,the operating speed of the cutter bar, cylinder, straw racks, and cleaning shoe and fan are maintained at the most desirable speed to assure best results for the crop and other conditions that you have to contend with.

This Thomas Hydraulic Drive unit is mounted on ball bearings in dust tight housings above the transmission case. The Thomas Hydraulic drive assembly which is the source of MM Powerflow is driven from the engine by a V-Belt-the same size belt is used from powerflow to transmission.

I think the early Oliver SP combines used the Thomas unit too. This is all I know for now.
