Got a tractor and the manual with it says BF avery, but it is moline yellow. It looks like an R. Serial # 5240 anyone know what color it should be, could have been painted over the years and would like it to be the right color. Other numbers are model# 1XB35L and Eng.# 2460-215 any help is appreciated.

Hello, I have the same tractor and I heard that the color is not the same as the prairie gold but something close. Does any one know if this is true and if so what is the correct color code? Thanks for any info. Mike

The truth is I do not know. But I have read that MM was not real picky about their paint and bought from several suppliers depending on price quotes. That is why some of the larger MMs (Us, for example) weather to a dull orange/brown, some weather to a chalky yellow.

Since I am thinking the Avery/MM R tractor was built at the Louisville plant instead of Hopkins MN they could very well have used a different mix or even purchased paint from a different supplier.

The Avery Rs were in production in 1951 when MM bought B.F. Avery. Its very possible they were factory produced in both the Avery red and the MM Prairie Gold versions. Many others were painted Prairie Gold by dealers before they were sold. Bottom line, both red and gold are probably correct colors for those tractors.

The drivetrain is very similar to the MM BF. It was the model that replaced the R. The major difference was the change from the Avery to the MM Unimatic hydraulic system. Conversion to the MM system is possible too, as I have seen Rs with the Unimatic hydraulics on them.

I think the serial number is on the top of the right frame rail near the footrest.

I will get you started onm the engine. It is a HerculesIXB. 3 means 3 timing gears. They also made one with 5 timing gears. It is SL not 5L. The engines in those tractors had replaceable dry sleeves. 3.250 bore 4 inch stroke. More answers from me, might need to wait.J
