Am redoing the power steering housing on my M5 and how do you get the piston sleeves out? Also, on my 670 Super, there was a piston guide that kept the piston from turning when turning. What keeps this piston, on the M5 from turning, or what keeps it in line with the steering sector? Harold

How hard should it come out? I'm scared that I'm going to damage the sleeve. According to the IT manual, it sounds like it should almost come out with your fingers. If I do get them out can they be reversed? ( Inside edge to the outside in case I chip it or something)? Thanks for your replies. Harold

As I recall, those sleeves have to be bumped out with a punch, preferably a brass one. There is no guide, it just works.

I think the rack gear on the piston won't twist as long as it is engaged in the sector. Make sure the teeth are turned the right way when you put it back.

may I ask why you want to remove them ? yes they can be damaged very easy. I have been able to put my new packing in by making sure with a hone that there are no wear marks to cut the new parts going in. Use plenty of lite oil like ahy tran fluid and get another hand and be very careful . If i can help more call me 574-536-9185 and there are more posts about this subject on here also

If you just remove the piston, how do you get the seal"packing" to start in the sleeve on the far side when you push it through?

I/T book says to take the sleeve on the far side out, put a 45 degree bevel in the inner end and put it back. then the bevel will start the packing in the sleeve on the far side from where you started the piston in at.

I have finished 3 of these now with success. I could not remove the sleeves on any of them. Remember the manuals are 40 yrs old also and working on the assumption that they are not stuck. I had located a local engine builder who sleeves engines and he told me he could build me new sleeves if needed. I tried without the removal and so far it has worked.

I'm concerned that when I put the piston back in that I will damage the new seals, and I don't know how I would be able to tell if I did. The sleeve is not chamfered so it is kind of sharp. I am going to put 3 or 4 expandable rubber pipe plugs in the sleeve and try to push it out with a hyd. jack. Been working on this tractor for two years and just about done. Tractor was my main tractor for years,so it has alot of hours, lots and lots of hours with a PTO corn dryer. If I have problems still I might call in the evening. Thanks for your help. Harold
