The packing nut at the water pump on my FTA leaks badly. If it needs to be replaced, are parts available? Where?

Wallace, The shaft is most likely worn. We pulled one out and the shaft O.D. was about half where the packing goes. That said, TRK was right about the packing, any hardware store should have it. The nut IS LEFT HANDED and hard to put a wrench on. grease the packing and install some then tighten some. Let sit with water to let the packing swell some. If needed, tighten nut, or add more packing.

I am again sticking my neck out as I have never seen a twin city.But I have dug out lots of packing seals on water and steam valves an put in new packing.It may be found anywhere they sell plumbing parts.It looks like a rope with graphite.There are some molded plumbing seals that may work.If you know someone that works in a power plant they may even steer you.Call the manager of the local power plant maintenance.It is my wish that you will find something to seal that up. Just want to add: You don't really have to remove the old packing. Just screw the nut out, wind some of the new packing cord around the shaft and screw the nut back in. Some nuts are left hand thread, so be careful.) If the nut goes back in as far as it used to be before it gets tight, you will probably need some more packing on the shaft.

The idea is to have the packing around the shaft tight enough to not leak but not so tight it wears the packing out prematurely. I usually start a bit on the loose side with the nut and keep tightening it in bits until the leak stops.

Being that it is a packing it will require periodic re-tightening as the packing wears.
