I just brought home a 1937 FTA but have a question about it. The MM/Twin City's usually have another brass tag on the engine stating it's a Twin City engine the engine model and serial no. This FTA doesn't have one and I can see traces of yellow paint on the block even though the rest of the tractor is grey. It's got GE 30A H-C heads and GE 1 11-44 blocks.

Could this be a replacement engine out of a GT or is it all original and someone just got excited with a paint brush?

Fungus,

The engine serial number should be found stamped on the crankcase just below the oil filter; there may be some guys on this site or the MM site that can tell you what year the crankcase was made. Other than that, according to my parts manual for the FT/FTA, you should have a GE engine with GE30 or GE30A (HC) heads. The cylinder blocks were probably replaced during an overhaul which would have been common practice especially at the end of WWII and shortly after since you might have trouble finding a new tractor. Any part replaced after 1938 would probably be painted yellow unless it was older stock. The only way to know for sure is to have someone check your engine serial number.

The motor you have is a LE which was used 21-32,FT,FTA, GT up to 1942 when the motor became the GE. One of my GT crankcases had an engine tag and the other one doesn't. On a FT I know of there is only one tag on the left side by the clutch adjusting hole.
