Uni-Matic Hydraulic System

HiFolks: My 1951 MM ZAU has the above system on it. It appears that it has not been used in years and the resevoir is empty. I have all the books but very little info as to what fluid was used and how much the res. holds. Can anyone give me some basic info so that I can deal with it. It appears from the books info MM made a cylinder also. Are they still common enough to come up with one? Any help would be appreciated. Drew s/w WI.

I have 3 tractors with the uni-matic sysytem and use universal hydraulic fluid in all of them.

Universal will work. Dad and Granddad used Exxon Torque Fluid 56 for years. Then our supplier switched to Shell 'Donax'. The last ZA I worked on I just filled with Dextron III and it seemed to be happy.

That system has to have either a Moline Cylinder with the check valves built in or else a double check valve in the lines between the control valve and the cylinder. Both lines are open to the reservoir when the control is in neutral and that is the reason a regular cylinder will drop its load.

RT and ZA used lifting jack with casting# 10A79 with 2 1/2" bore. Larger tractors (U & G) had a larger capacity pump & used 10A80 jack which was 3 1/2", both had same stroke. They contain a check valve necessary for the Uni-Matic operation. These come up for sale on ebay often. Note shipping is an issue as they're fairly heavy: my 10A79 weighs about 40 lbs.
