I have a 1953 Minneapolis Moline ZB that I"m rebuilding and when i took the number 4 piston out of the jug i noticed that the bottom of the skirt has a hair line crack that runs up about an inch from the bottom , it goes to the first lip on the inside of the piston skirt. Will this hurt any thing or should i have this brassed on the inside of it ? I dont see what it will hurt as long as it does come apart some how or crack more as it is right now only on the bottom. What is the best thing to do fix it or ,replace it,and if you replace it how do i get the right size dia. piston to match the cylinder.Ever thing else looks good. I think i did the crack when i was taking apart, as the pistons were stuck and i lift the jug up with cherry picker while attached to the crank that is frozen up to try pulling piston out and to free up crank so i could remove jugs from the block. I was rocking the tractor back and forth a little bit while the weight of the tractor was on it and the piston skirt was out of the jug about 2 inches and i see there is a slit mark running horizontally across the piston where the crack starts and goes to the bottom of the piston skirt. I finally got the pistons out by taking a plug and taking the guts out of it and putting a threaded pipe to the inside threads to be able to screw a grease fitting in it and then welded around the top of the plug to keep the pc. in and so it would not blow by. Filled cylinder with grease and screwed in spark plug grease fitting and pumped the grease to it till the piston popped out of the jug. I should of did it this whey first but you learn by mistakes ,now i just need to know how to fix the mistake. Thanks for any help.

Mike D.,
A cracked piston is asking for trouble. If the piston skirt fails, normally the piston will come apart. Not a pretty sight. Balance is another problem. Moline used a letter code to balance the piston weights. Personally I would get some new pistons.

Currently All I have are fourty over sets in aluminum. I would advise calling Wendell Everett too if you need some other size.

Mike, I myself would not use that piston, don't want to go to all that work and have more problems. I would sure look at the other pistons carefully. I take it they are the cast Iron pistons? If you have the std. bore. they are not that hard to find a good used one. I have a few. good luck.

I wouldn't put brass on the piston. it will mess with the weight. Right now, all four pistons are supposed to weight nearly the same. Look for a good used one. Back in the 90's Wendell Everett sold me one new piston to go into a Z engine when one of mine had the top rusted off. 740-922-3335.
