Hi Folks: By the questions I have, you can tell this is my first MM. I have the OM and waiting for the repair manual. OM says to remove motor side plate to clean oil pump screen. Is that the large plate on the left side of motor and what is procedure to remove same? There is a #on that plate. Is that the motor number? Old OM says spark plug gap should be between .022 and .025. Is that the current setting for the plugs? Last but not least! I dragged her home in January during some subzero weather. I removed the drain plugs for the crank and trans. The large drain plug for the trans. got dropped in the bucket and then lost. When I went to replace with a 3/4" pipe plug, I discovered that there were no threads. From the wear mark surrounding the hole, it appears there was a larger type plug used instead of a pipe plug. The trans. had quiete alot of frozen water in it when I removed the plug. What kind of trouble have I got myself into on that. Thanks for your time a expert advise on my questions. Drew s/w WI.

As far as that drain plug goes, I would think you can always tap the hole for the next larger pipe size, if that is your only problem. One thing you need to check is how far the plug can go up into the case without hitting something. If you are worried about the case being cracked, you might fill it with used motor oil (I'm trying to think of something cheap here) and see if it oozes out of cracks anywhere.
I wouldn't reccommend driving it much with just the motor oil in there, though. Some parts may overheat and bind up.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like the plug must have been broken because of the ice or someone had mickey moused the plug before and the ice broke it out. Hope the main case isn't cracked too. Drew

Just a tip Drew. I had a ZAS and discovered that it had the wrong dipstick, oil level too low. Before you put the side plate back on, refill the crankcase with oil until it just covers the sump screen. Reinstall the side cover, check the dipstick as it should now read full. If not adjust the length of the dipstick accordingly.

As far as cleaning the sump screen, yes, remove the large plate on the left side of the engine. This allows access to the screen. Easy job to do.
