I have a couple of early Z maintenance manuals, one shows replacing the loose fiber packing in the oil filter, the other shows a filter cartridge. Anyone know what year the change in oil filters took place? The packing was part# JE-7017.

Also the earlier manual has no reference to a distributor, only a magneto while the later manual has a section on distributors. Anyone know what year distributors were introduced?

I think the re-packable oil filter cartridges depended more on the different filter manufacturers than on a specific changeover date. Some probably supplied sealed cartridges, some supplied the canister and cloth waste separately.

I removed one of those re-packable cartridges from a '48 RTU.

I've got 2 of the cartridges for the packing, 1 is painted olive drab, military, the other is just plated like origional, also have 2 or 3 bags for the origional packing.
