minnie mo 5 star tractors- good machines?

I may have an opportunity to pick up very cheaply, 3 5 star or maybe jet star tractors. They all appear complete, but apparently have problems of some sort.

What do you folks think of these models- did they have any chronic problems? Were they good machines?

I've always liked the looks of these, and if I got them running, they would be a huge asset on the farm. I think these models all have 3 pt hitch, live pto, live hydraulics- right? I don't recall if they are gas or diesel.

Kevin M. You must like 5 stars. Just finished mine up today. Gave it an overhaul. Painted the blade ect. Runs real nice. Have not had a bit of trouble with mine. Hydr. and three point, power steering, ampli torque all work great. Has new tires and nice paint. Hoping to trade for some R"s with a guy. 5 star a little to big for my garage. Owned two 5 stars in my day. Nice looking tractors.

I am a huge fan of the star series. I have owned two 335, three Jet Stars, two Jet Star 2, one 4-star, and four 5-stars. Unfortunately the first 5-star I wish I could get back. Replaced it with an M5, then an M670. Should have just set the M5 engine blocks on it and called it good cause it was a great tractor. I've heard there were problems here and there but never anything too specific. The 5-star was a huge improvement over the UB and UB special. I was also unique in that it was the only "big block" MM tractor styled in that way. Some love the look, Dad hated the big cast cross on the nose, but it stands out from all the other MM. I still own a very tired diesel and it will never leave my place. Another feature was that the diesel 5-star was a 336 engine and a gas was only a 283. The M5 changed that. Find out what you gat coming and work out a good deal. If you are not happy, I can name many MM collectors that would love to take over for you.

Yes, the 5 Star is a nice looking tractor if you are just going to look at it or parade it. But just ask anyone who bought one to farm with and they will tell you that the 5 Star is what put MM out of business. A lot of people who owned one, never bought another Moline. They stayed in the shop more than on the farm! The hydraulics never did work correct, MM finally got it right on the M5. (a little too late)

I'm a MM man but do know that the 5 Star didnt have a great reputation in this part of the country.The problems were mostly fixed when the M-5 came out.

We farmed with two 5 stars, a diesel and a LPG. don't recall ever having much trouble them.They started us having 2 M5s, one which has 25,000 hours on,2, 670, and a 1355. Had the most problems with the 1355.

No Kevin, The 5 Star was not All the cause of MM's decline, but it certainly started the ball rolling.

Any MM you can pick up cheap is worth it...Where are you located? Some came with 3pt, the live hyd and pto were usually standard I believe. I have a 5 Star. I do think they look nice also.

I own three of them and I would buy more if the chance ever comes up. The 5 star was the the basic opener for the newer style models. I.E.M5 M602, early M670. It was replaced by the M5 in 1960. But living up to the MM standards of not throwing away anything the parts will interchange with other models. They do have a few faults though as does any model I guess. The hydraulics can be a bit of a bear to get to work correctly and can sometimes just be a pain. The diesel pump is another if it has been converted to the Roosa Master your okay but the Bosch can also has it faults as well. But as with any tractor that is going to be 45 plus years old they will give you the preformance of a 45 plus year old tractor. The 5 star was a basic work horse that was a model U with three point. The tractor just had a short production life because it came at time when the styling was changing to the more straight and blocky edges of the time period.
