I am considering buying an M5 (see my post below). I am still interested in any other advice as to what to watch out for. Also, what size plow would I want for this tractor? I think it is rated at 54 drawbar HP. Would a 4-14 be about right for it?

Thanks for any advice.

Gary

I think your plow size depends on your soil type and the depth you want to plow. In my area in Texas we used a 2 or 3 bottom on the M5. Fuel costs and other factors have just about eliminated the moldboard plow here. We used almost 100% reversible plows and they seem to pull harder. Consequently if you want a reversible moldboard and can find one they are cheap around here.

It all depends...what do you want ? MM advertised as 5 plow tractor and an old timer in the area has pulled 5-16 in clay here ,same rig now for 43 yrs. But remember these tractors are getting old and frail and should not have to work hard anymore. I agree buy a 3 or 4 bottom and let the old girl take it easy, having said that, at plow days you will see me with 6-16 behind my M602...basic same tractor

Hey Gary We had an M5 propane that pulled a Massey 4/16 mounted plow with no problems. Depends on how much tiger sh-- clay you have and the size of your fields, you may be happier with a three bottom, power shouldn"t be a problem. Harry
