MM 4 1/4 X 5 283A 4 serial # 01913555 Have heads off to replace freeze plugs and head gaskets and am wondering if when I loosened the head bolts if I need to replace the gasket between the block and the cylinders. Dont know if there is a gasket there or not but thought I'd ask before I have to "re-do" due to me not asking a simple question. Thanks, davids

davids,

If you haven't disturbed their seal then don't replace them. If they were leaking/weaping then now is the time. You have to remove the oil pan and remove the cylinders and piston/rod assy at the same time in order to replace the gasket below the cylinder block.

If the core plugs were bad in the heads chances are they're bad in the cylinder blocks too and you'll end up replacing them soon. Now would be the time to do it right and not have to worry about tearing it down again. Your 1951 engine with 2 cylinder blocks has core plugs between the blocks. The only way to replace them is remove the cylinder block assemblies (or at least one assembly to gain access to the other core plug).

David, yes there is a gasket there. I don't think the head set comes with that gasket either. If you are careful enough you can just reuse them by putting a thin layer of silcone done. But if you tear them up you can get the gaskets easy enough as well. The gasket is there to keep from leaking around the upper and lower blocks and there is no oil pressure on it. Be sure to replace them any way with new or the old ones as this will effect the height of the blocks in relation to how high the piston comes up on top dead center.
