I have a MF 97, and i was wondering what i can do with the 504 diesel for alittle more power. Ive done alittle fiddling with the pump wich is a roosa master, but i think im going to try and get a pto shaft on it and have it done on a dyno becuase i probly did more bad than good, i was getting a thick grayish smoke on a tuff pull. Overall the motor is pretty solid, with still staying safe how many rpm can i turn? Should i put an egt guage on it to be safe or is that only necasary for turbo diesels? Last but not least what should one weight in at without stripping it to much, i might take the hydrualics off but id like to keep it looking stock otherwise.

The easiest horsepower is to take the air cleaner assembly and remove it while pulling. The more air the better the burn, put it back for farming also if you have the preheater in the manifold remove as well. Less restriction better power.

I have a 1964 97 that i have been using for stock tractor pulling here in Oregon for about 6 years now and have done quite well with it. It is consistanly in the top three. When we first bought it, we had the pump go through by a local shop that turned it up as much as it could go without becoming erratic. Apparently the Roosa pumps on these tractors are at their maximum for fuel delivery due to the design of the pumping head and lack of mechanical advance, as on a G1000 pump. We have it set about 10% over stock RPM. Anything over that and it starts go get a flutter in the rpm, due to inconsistant fuel. I did ad a 3-5psi electric transfer pump to keep the fuel flow constant to the pump, as it is just gravity feed through the filters. The transfer pump in the Injection pump does not produce a lot of "suck". We set the timing at 11.5-12 BTDC. Anything more than this, it would not start as easy. We ran ours on a dyno at first, but had a pto bearing seize up and it killed the tractor. I pull it in anywhere from 9000-11000lb classes. It does best at 10 and 11000. It also does better on a soft track, where the tires can slip a bit to keep the RPM up. On a hard track, with the high ground speed, it will always run out of power.
