Removing Cam

According to the manual I should be able to remove the cam by lifting the tappets and slide the cam out as the final step but my center cam bearing interferes with the tappets. The tappets can't be pushed high enough to get it out. What could cause this? I don't want to remove the blocks but might have to.

Since you didn't say what its in, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you are working on a 283 in a U.

Did you remove both the governor and the oil pump? Their drive gear is cut in the center of the cam bearing surface, with a sliding surface on each side.

That may or may not do the trick.

I can't remember if the tappets can actually go up in the pushrod bores in the blocks or not. And if that was the design intent the blocks might be off center to the point the tappets won't go up in them. Otherwise, They do usually get gunky to the point they seem to only want to move in their normal travel and tend to bind if expected to move farther in any direction.
