I have a neighbor looking for an injection pump for a GBD. It has the stock 425 motor. He said it is a American Bosch model PSB. He said that the original is in the repair shop and needs a new head. He told me that it is going to cost more to fix than he feels the tractor is worth. I told him I would check on here to see if anyone would have one that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Thanks for any help.

Thanks

Sorry guys, I guess I should have said, he wants to stick with the bosch pump and not do a change over. I think he told me that it was going to be around a 1000 dollars to get his pump fixed. As far as the complete model number on the pump I will see if I can get it from him.

Thanks Nebraska

J Schwiebert, he told me that the repair shop said that the head on the pump was bad, as far as what is wrong with the head, he doesn't know. Is there a lot that can go wrong with the head? The repair shop said that they found a head on the east coast somewhere. Are they that hard to find that they cost that much?

Thanks

Nebraska,
It is not uncommon to spend that much to rebuild a PSB pump if the head is bad. I've seen shops charge as much as $1500. Parts are getting quite hard to find for the single plunger PSB pumps. I'm no expert but I'm told the single plunger can stick from sitting or other reasons and if you crank over the engine damage will occur inside the pump. Just a word of warning if you're trying to start that PSB equipped diesel tractor that has been sitting for awhile.

BMG1, what can be done to prevent this from happening again (if he gets it fixed)? Is it ok to pull the head off and inspect things before trying to start? What other tractors used this pump?

Thanks Nebraska

How hard are you going to work this tractor? Do you have any friends with a Case 500 Diesel? J.

I did an article for the Oliver collectors and I mentioned if the tractor has set for some time pumm the control unit off and slip a 6 inch screw drive in the control slot. Put about one fing effort on the handle if the control unit does not move don't try to start it. Also if you do not plan to run it for a while put diesel test oil in the tank and run it on that before you shut it off. More questions?

Nebraska,
I don't have much of a recommendation to prevent this other than keep clean fresh fuel in it and run it on a regular basis. Diesel will varnish the insides of a pump in time causing components to stick and bind. The PSB pump is not too difficult to work on but you should read up on its disassembly procedure before attempting to remove any parts of it. Some Oliver parts books show a good breakdown and their shop manuals do a good job of describing repair procedures.
Early 6 cylinder Oliver and Case diesel tractors used the PSB pump. MM switched from the PSB to the Roosa midway through 6 cylinder GVI diesel production run. I'm not sure if it is the same part number and rotary head part but most of the parts should interchange. The rotary head will be unique depending on the specific engine fuel requirements. Your diesel shop should be able to tell you what other tractors used the same model pump.

Do you have the complete model number for the PSB pump? Remember on the Roosa you will need fuel lines and a change in the drive gears too. J.

You have to change the pump drive also. Which means you have to remove the front of the tractor to remove the timing cover. How much to fix the PSB pump?

Bet you could find a Roosa Master pump off a G 706 or Massey 97 fairly easy this would be a good update.
