I have some chipped teeth on my moline big mo 500 flywheel.Can I weld and file these chipped areas to match the other teeth? If so what rod do i want? Is there any major saftey factors (fire)? thanks Shawn

Please do not try to cut and weld the flywheel or ringgear.It wont work.You will cause unrepairable damage.Do it right the first time so there won' be a second time.

Are you thinking of trying to fix that ring gear through the 3" starter hole?

You may can braze it up and file it out or something but its going to be a patch job at best. That ring gear is a shrink fit on the flywheel and if you go to heating and welding it it may get loose and then you will probably ruin the flywheel trying to stick the ring gear to it.


You need to lOOk at your tractor and see what it would take to get to the flywheel and change out the ring gear. If you don't know by looking at your tractor, you need to make friends with someone who can tell you and perhaps he will even help.


To answer your other question, Whether the engine mounts to the subframe or not, you are still going to have to get the engine separated from the transmission at the bellhousing to get to the flywheel.

Does anyone know if the big mo 500 needs to be split to remove flywheel? I was wondering.. seeing how it has the loader and backhoe, weather it has a frame mounted engine. Also, I was talking about welding with flywheel inplace to eliminate need to dismantle everything. thanks again..

I am assumming that you have the flywheel off of the tractor. If so Note where the teeth are worn in relation to the position on the flywheel. This is where the starter has kicked in. The engine will stop in the same spots each time. Heat the ring gear, take it off, like previously posted, turn the ring around and move the good teeth to the area where the starter kicks in. Now, you have an almost new ring gear. You can weld the the missing chips on the teeth, but my way is the easy way in the long run. Of course, the next time it happens, it will be buying a new ring gear. HTH

I have thought of possibly cutting a section of the flywheel out and cutting the same section off a good section of another flywheel. Then welding that into its place. .Or even cut it right and half and do the same with the new ring gear and weld in place, spot welding all the way around to ensure will stay in place.(again to eliminate splitting tractor.) not sure it either is a good idea...any input would helpful.

To do it right split the tractor. Yeah it is a pain but all the same if you are going to use it split the tractor and be done with it. If you do what all you are talking about as far as welding and cutting on the flywheel and on the starter ring gear you are asking for more trouble and you still won't have it fixed. If you cut it and cut the new ring gear into sections you might as well not stop there and cut it all up as well. Your best bet is to split it and replace it right or get the old one off and turn it a quarter of a turn or so. But it yours to do with as you like.
