my jet star 3 super when you frist crank it you can turn the steering wheel and nothing happens. but after it runs for about a minute it starts working. i talked to and friend and one of his does the same thing.thanks for any help. John

Instruction book says that there is a valve in the system that is supposed to retain fluid in the steering circuit when shut off. (So tractor can be steered if engine suddenly dies or whatever.) On my Jet3super you can steer with engine off, but it takes much greater effort and you can feel a ratchet action back up through the wheel. I bet that valve is not functioning on your tractor and the fluid is draining back to the reservoir.
I/T manual is not specific, but I think the valve in question is the valve under the fuel tank. Pressure,return, steering wheel motor and steering lines to front bolster attach to it. I do not know if replacement parts are available for it or not.

This condition usually results from an air leak into the suction side of the pump. Replace the seal in the filter canister and any hoses between the resevoir & filter and between the filter & pump, making sure to get the clamps tight enough to seal. It seems that this condition is aggrivated by colder weather, I assume because the suction is stronger due to the oil being thicker.

If there is any air in the system, it seems to end up in the steering system where very little fluid is moving & it takes awhile to get it out.
turning the wheel against the stops & holding it several times seems to help.

If you have a Jet 3 Super, you probably have full hydraulic steering. I would assume that your fluid may be a tad low or cold. The older models are only hydro-assist steering. I had a little lesson on how those work this weekend myself.
