I want to change the cam in my U. The book says to block the lifters. How do you block the lifters? I was going to remove the motor and turn it upside down.

Turn it upside down would work, provided you remove the rocker arms and pushrods.That way the tappets can move all the way to the top of their bores.
It would probably work to lay the engine on its side (intake/exhaust side) too. You also probably need to remove the oil pump and the governor. I don't think their gears will clear to the end of the shaft.

If you have the cylinder blocks off, just pull the lifters out of their holes.

Assuming the engine is still together, Another Idea I would try is to bend pieces of fairly stiff wire-like piano wire into a U-shape with a tiny L-shaped hook on each end about 1/8-3/16" long. Make the U-shape small enough to go down the pushrod hole and long engough so the hooks in the end snag in the oil holes in the tappet. Then pull the tappets up (You may have to remove the oil pan and push from underneath as the gooey oil on old ones only let them travel in their accustomed place) and tie each U-wire off with baling wire to the rafters, engine hoist, etc.
