445 pistons

i have a 445 that one piston has a hole in it. i bought an irrigation motor that says its a "206" engine, but the piston is just a tad larger then the one in my tractor. does anyone know why they would be different? both gas engines, both same model numbers.

When an engine is overbored the new pistons will usually have the oversize stamped on the top. Buff it off and you will see a +10 or +20 or +30 on the top of the piston. That will let you know that it is 10 thousands over or 20 or 30 thousands oversize.

Most M&W sets were marked "STD" on the pistons even though they were 0.125" overbore. This is because M&W also sold oversizes (0.125 + 0.060 for example). I've got a set like this from a 445 marked "STD". So, if they're aluminum pistons marked "STD" its possilbe they're not really the stock standard bore.

Just want to say that not all oversize pistons will say so on top. I Got a set of 4 from Wendell Everett two years ago and one of them was not marked. Apparrently it missed that step in manufacturing.

I suggest you find someone with either a micrometer or a dial caliper that measures in thousandths and figure out what oversize it is.

Another thought:

If the oversize pistons from the other 206 are in good condition and the piston pins aren't excessively loose in them or the rod bushings, you can bore your 445 blocks to fit them and get the piston/bore clearance back to original tolerance.

One final question: Why did the hole come in the other piston? If it was from detonation, you need to fix that.

Those blocks can be bored to many different sizes along with corresponding pistons. Get us a precise measurement of yours and we probably have a good used one to match it. 920 295 3278, Dale
