Rear Main Seal on 445

Hello all,
Is there anyway to replace rear main without pulling the crankshaft on a 445 Moline? We just got the 445 running and we have a slightly more than small oil leak from the rear main on the tractor.

If someone could lend me a hand, it would be appreciated.

Don't do like I did once, forgot to put the gasket behind the seal housing. Leaked bad! Had to split the tractor again.

To replace the rear main seal on a 445, you have to split the tractor at the bellhousing and remove the flywheel. The seal is a one piece unit in a stamped steel housing held in by 4 or 6 screws.

Your leak could also be coming from your tranny. There is a seal just inside the front tranny cover. While you have the tractor split, you should replace it as well. A word of advice, if you pull the front tranny cover to replace the seal, tie the torq-amplifier lever in the forward position. This will save you considerable head-aches.

Any advice on splitting the tractor? We've split a couple of tractors in this shop. We've got one overhead hoist and we've used blocks and a jack for the other half...

AND, as far as the Ampli-torq lever needing to be in the forward position, is that to keep something from being a headache in re-installation??

The front cover of the tranny holds the TA assembly together. When you remove the cover without holding the TA lever in the forward position, the clutch assemby of the TA can slide forward. If it comes too farward, it can be a pain to get reassembled.

It is one of those thing you only do once.

Just wanted to add: If your crankshaft has a spiral groove in the seal area you must use a felt replacement seal. A lip seal will not be satisfactory as the groove causes rapid failure of the seal lip.
