KTA Crankshaft

I asked earlier on this website for the crankshaft specs (crankpin diameters, clearances) on a 1935 KTA. It has bronze backed babbitt bearings in it with adjusting shims. The crankpins are larger than a U's (same motor, 283ci) but I'm without a manual and do not know the specs. I was a little leary of the last response and am just asking again for reassurance.

Any help would be great!

Thanks for the torque specs. My book shows crank pins for KEF 2.5770-2.5575 factory standard.

My calculations would say your crank is 20 thou under. I would say the crank has has been turned. If you can wait a couple of weeks I can get actual sizes for KTA. Normally MM didn't change much from year to year or model to model.

This motor is a KEA engine, the one before the KEF, and before the KEC as well. I'm pretty sure the crankpins are smaller.

My measurements are all between 2.368" and 2.369" for the crankpins and for the rod end diameters too. As much as I don't want to, I have a feeling I'll be removing the crankshaft out of it.

Anyone else have an answer?

According to the specs I looked up for you before:

rod-2.3725-2.3730 oil clearance .001-.0035 p/n 9780B

your crankpins are only .004-.005 undersize.

My book says your crankshaft should be forging #KE 401 B.

After thinking about this, If your crankpins are only about .001-.002 eccentric-you have to measure at several points around the crankpin as they do wear egg shaped- and If you can remove enough shims to get .001-.0035 oil clearance* you should be O.K. without a regrind.

*Meaning at the closest point oil clearance is at least .001 and at the widest point oil clearance not more than .0035.

I checked the casting no. on the crank. It has KE 401 on the front half and $B on the rear half.

I understand what your saying about adjusting the shims for the proper clearance. This tractor isn't going to be doing any real work once it's running either, it's simply a show/parade tractor. I don't mind a little noise, but not knocking like mad!

If a KTA has a KE 401B it is ths standard crank that any U uses up to at least 1948. I just sold one with that casting number.

Not same. Same forging, but different finish size. The rod journals on your your U crank are ground about .200 larger than on the KTA.
