I have what I believe is a 1967 jet star 3 Lp converted to gas. Below the radiator on the right side I have a hydraulic fluid leak. There is a breather?? of sorts just forward of the 1" plug on the top of the power steering unit. When I turn the wheel, fluid comes out of this breather. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks, John

There is a rack gear with a piston on each end in the steering gear. It sounds like your piston seals have let go. Then the reservoir around the steering gears-the rack gear meshes with the sector gear that is on the shaft that turns the front end- filled up with fluid and it runs out the vent. The reservoir is supposed to only have 90 wt. in there.

The bright side-if there is a bright side-is the lower seal on the sector gear shaft must be pretty good. They usually leak there.

Also, better check your hydraulic fluid in the reservoir on the 3 point.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a pretty big job. Any idea where I might get a blown up view of that area.

I don't have any way to e-mail a parts book drawing. Hopefully someone else will be able to help you.

do I need the parts book or the service book. I can buy one, but I just want to make sure I get the right book. I like pictures and exploded views when I get into places I have never been before. I do appreciate your help. Thanks, John

John,
I have one of those I/T shop service manual collections for MM.

There is a pretty good picture of that front support on page 18. Although labeled for U302, it would be similar to your jetstar3. Yours does have a channel subframe from the front of the engine to the front of the tractor, doesn't it?

It shows how you will have to unbolt the front support from the subframe and slide it forward to get to the steering pistons covers.

It may be best to get the I/T manual and go from there. There are a few genuine MM service manuals, but when you find one, they are expensive.
