UB 1st and 4th gear

After sitting this winter, I am haing trouble getting shifter into either 1st or 4th gear (they are in the middle) I have no trouble with R and 2 and 5 and 3 Before I start tearing things apart, looking for advice and what I might do. Thanks

Just restored a UTS. Problems w/ 5th gear. Everyone told me problem was a bad bearing. Howrver, went down into the shifting mechanism and fixed it from there. At best, I am a SHADE TREE mechanic. There is nothing to be afraid of going into the top of the transmission, If I can figure it out, you can!

The problem is likely in the shift rail and detent spring and ball as previously mentioned. The middle rail is always going to be more difficult than the other two as near as I can tell because of the way the rails are arranged. You'll have to do some considerable disassembly to remove the transmission top cover then the plate that holds the springs down on the balls. Go for it!!!!! !

Don't have a UB but have 2 ZBs that are hard to shift in 1st and 4th. Part of the problem for them at least is 1st is just too slow. They can pull nearly as much in 2nd. And 4th is not used much because there just was never enough power to plow in 4th. (We don't really plow, we use a 7' disk or Athens Bog harrow.)

My guess is the rail is rusty or dry-Its about the furtherest thing from the oil in the transmission- or the detent ball is stuck in its bore. I can't remember if the detent balls are in the front or rear mount for the rails. May be different for a UB anyhow.
