1937 / 1938 was the change over years for MM/TC tractors as far as Grey vs Prairie Gold. I have a KTA that is like John's J with all the tell tale signs of being gold. Besides that I have pictures of it in orignal clothes as well. I also know of at least two others the same way, another J of Charlie Doty's and an MTA owned by someone else also being Gold as well.

My JTU has the "RE" conversion, is 75th from the last built, came to me in a gold form, back in '87 I thought all TC should be gray, so I painted it gray. It had gold in the bellhousing, and everywhere that would make you think it was that color from the factory, when I do it again, it'll be gold.

Most JT's I have ever seen, whether on steel or rubber were painted Twin City Grey with Red wheels. According to a book I have, the first MM tractors to be painted Prairie Gold were the Model ZT tractors that were introduced and a few were built in 1936.

It seems like someone said that either some of the '37 JTs were painted yellow after MM built a few ZT prototypes in '37 or else the ZT prototypes were painted grey, I can't remember. Probably lots were repainted prairie gold when MM fully went to the ZT series tractors. Especially the ones that were repowered with the RE (Z tractor) engines.

Its your tractor, paint it the way you like.

I plan to paint my JT a fairly dark grey. And paint the wheels red, even though I think some of the old timers said they were originally grey. Someday. . .
