I HAVE A 1959 5-STAR, 4 CYL. DIESEL. THE CONTROL VALVE WON'T STOP LEAKING. I'VE PUT IN A NEW RUBBER SEAL, RUBBER O-RING, AND SILICONED THE UNDER THE COVER BUT NOT THE RETAINER AND AM RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS. CAN I SILICONE THE RUBBER SEAL AREA. I HAVE TO ADD A GALLON OF TRANSMISSION FLUID (THIS IS WHAT THE BOOK RECOMMENDS FOR THE HYDRAULICS) AFTER EVERY 3 OR 4 HRS OF USE. I USE DEXRON-MERCON III. COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM? THANK YOU, BRIAN

Brian,
The leak could very likely be on the steering piston in the front casting and just running out the steering shaft and control valve because the front casting is full. Silicone is NOT a good idea around hydraulics, It can get in the pump and valves. The fluid your are using is fine.
To check to see if the front casting is full, I think there is a fill level plug you can remove to see if hydraulic oil runs out. The front casting should only have 80/90 in it.
John
