Wondering if you could give me some hints on my '49 MM Z. It has kinda steered hard for the last couple of years. Seems there was a hard spot, then it turned easier. After sitting most of the winter and summer, I started it up to run it around and I can't hardly turn the steering wheel either way. Just wondering where to start. I assume the gearbox, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks-Bob

Thanks a million, Alan. I appreciate you taking the time to answer. I will print your reply and check it out. I have a NOS front pedestal for a Z, and I was thinking seriously about tearing it down and replacing it, thinking something in the casting was worn. This might save a lot of hassel. Thanks again-BOb

I would jack the front ent up so you can turn the wheels. There are two bearings in the vertical shaft and two on the worm gear. You could back off the adjusting nut where the steering shaft goes in to the housing and see if it makes a difference. Sometimes they have some rust on the gears also. Dont forget to check the up and down play in the vertical shaft also.
